Zoe StraussBroad StreetBelow is 10 photos of Philadelphia photographer Zoe Strauss’ work to commemorate her mid-career retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art “Zoe Strauss 10 years.” Truly a masterpiece of community programming, the exhibit also includes a billboard project with 54 billboards city-wide, the opening night extravaganza last night with DJ Questlove and free food, as well as her office hours throughout the course of the exhibition at the museum. And today was an amazing discussion with photographer Allan Sekula, writer Sally Stein, and curator Peter Barberie. If you find yourself in Philadelphia, don’t miss the exhibit and all of the special programming here.

As an artist, sometimes I just see things and I love them so much, or they feel so kindred to my vision of the world and my surrounding environment that I almost covet or envy that someone else made them. That is how I felt when I opened my recently delivered copy of the book “Golden Palms” by Ed Panar. There isn’t really much more to say than that, except that I have to declare it as a favorite book, and say that it is continuing to rock my world.

Photography by Rory Mulligan. (Peter Barberie turned me onto his work, and boy is it swell). His work switches tones so quickly, from street photo images, to personal narrative ones, to portraits, to small details, to abstractions. It’s a puzzle that keeps me looking, very actively, at his images.
